Installation

Installation site: where best to place the safe

Storage room, study, or basement? Which space is truly suitable, when structural integrity becomes an issue, how it is anchored, and what matters for the transport route.

A safe can be set up almost anywhere. Our service team can get it to nearly any floor and into any nook. The more interesting question is not where it’s possible, but where it makes sense: well-positioned against burglars, convenient for you, and without any structural surprises.

Is your preferred spot a good choice?

Tell us which room you have in mind and approximately how heavy the safe will be. You will immediately receive an assessment of the room and the corresponding anchoring instructions.

Room selection

Which room is suitable, and why

The most important sentence first: Choose a place that you can reach easily. Anything that is inconvenient will not be used, and a safe that is left standing open or never filled in the first place protects nothing.

Contrary to intuition, an upper floor is often the better choice. Burglars mostly enter through the ground floor, and carrying heavy loot down a flight of stairs is exactly the obstacle that causes opportunistic thieves to fail. On top of that, there is the practical aspect: in a study or dressing room, documents and jewelry are exactly where they are needed.

★
Two rules that apply everywhereThe safe must not be visible from the outside through a window, and it does not belong in a wardrobe. The bedroom is the first room burglars search, and the wardrobe is the most well-known hiding place of all.

In the basement, structural stability is never an issue, but the climate is. A dehumidifier protects the contents and electronics. And a point that is often overlooked: Fireproof safes are sealed against fire-extinguishing water, not standing floodwater. Therefore, place them slightly elevated in the basement.

Strategy

Hide it or show it off confidently?

The recommendations above follow the classic strategy: the safe remains inconspicuous so that, in an emergency, it is not found in the first place. For compact safes and standard security levels, this is the right approach.

However, there is also the opposite approach. From a high resistance grade, roughly grade 3 and up, a well-anchored safe can also be placed prominently in a room. The rationale behind this: burglars will focus on the visible safe and waste their time there instead of searching and ransacking the entire house. The safe withstands the attack, and the rest of the apartment remains largely untouched. The prerequisites are a correspondingly high resistance grade and professional anchoring. We would be happy to clarify which strategy fits your situation during a consultation.

Structural stability

Can the floor handle it?

In the vast majority of cases, the answer is: yes, without you having to check anything. Our compact series range between 98 and 198 kilograms, which is less than a well-stocked bookshelf or a large aquarium in the same area.

Weight What this means
up to 200 kg Not critical, in any room and on any floor. No action required.
200 to 500 kg Not critical on the ground floor. On an upper floor, place it against a load-bearing wall; then it is generally not critical either.
over 500 kg We will clarify the installation with you in advance. Due to transport, it is a planning case anyway.
Wooden beam ceiling, old building Regardless of weight, coordinate briefly; load-bearing capacities vary greatly here.

Why the common calculation of "safe weight versus load capacity per square meter" is misleading: the specification of around 200 kilograms per square meter describes an evenly distributed load across the entire room, not a weight limit for an individual object. The decisive factors are the footprint, the span of the ceiling, and, above all, the location: the load path is shortest against a load-bearing wall, and longest in the center of the room. This is why being near a wall is always the better position.

i
Offices aren't more load-bearing than living spacesA common assumption is that commercial spaces can handle more. This is not true for office areas: according to EN 1991-1-1 and its national annex, they are rated at around 200 kilograms per square meter, just like residential rooms. Only retail and storage spaces exceed this.
Anchoring

To anchor or not to anchor?

It is not mandatory, but it is the most effective measure against being carried away, and insurers usually require it for safes under 1,000 kilograms. How it is anchored depends entirely on the substrate.

Concrete or screed without underfloor heating
Floor anchoring with heavy-duty anchors, the most stable option.
Underfloor heating
Do not drill into the floor. Instead, anchor it to a solid wall via the back panel.
Wooden floor or floorboards
Also via the back panel to a solid wall. Lightweight partition walls are not suitable for this.
Fireproof safes
From 60 minutes of protection, they are anchored exclusively in the floor so that the insulation remains intact.

In rented apartments, drilling is permitted and can be reversed upon moving out. Upon request, our technicians will carry out the anchoring professionally and issue a certificate for your insurance company and authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to keep a safe?
In a location you can reach easily. An upper floor is often the better choice, as burglars mostly break in on the ground floor and are reluctant to carry heavy loot down stairs. The safe must not be visible from the outside through a window.
Can my floor support the safe?
Up to 200 kilograms, this is not a concern in any room or on any floor. Between 200 and 500 kilograms, it should be placed against a load-bearing wall on an upper floor. For weights over 500 kilograms or in buildings with wooden beam ceilings, we will coordinate the installation with you in advance.
How is it anchored if there is underfloor heating in the way?
In that case, we do not drill into the floor, but anchor it to a solid wall via the back panel. The same applies to wooden floors and floorboards. Lightweight partition walls are not suitable for this.
Am I allowed to drill in a rented apartment?
Yes, this is permitted and can be reversed when moving out. Upon request, our technicians can handle the anchoring and provide a certificate for your insurance company and the authorities.
Can the safe go in the basement?
Yes, structural stability is never an issue there. Pay attention to the climate
