Buying a gun safe: It all comes down to the right class.
Gun safes are safes adapted for the storage of weapons. What is required of them can be stated in a few sentences:
This also regulates the security requirements for storage containers, depending on the number and type of weapons as well as ammunition. The aim of these regulations is to prevent misuse, theft, and unauthorized access.
Bremer Tresor has been designing gun safes in various classes since 1978, and we are experts in the manufacture of high-quality security solutions. Whether you are looking for a gun safe for hunters, officials, or sports shooters, through our individual safe consultation, we will work with you to find the ideal gun safe for your requirements.
All gun safes in our online shop are tested and certified according to EN 1143-1. They are durable, protected against break-ins, and offer a convenient, space-efficient way to store weapons. Due to the certificate, the gun safes can be assigned a security level (or resistance class/grade).
Gun safe Class 0 and Class 1
The Class 0 gun safe and the Class 1 gun safe differ in their resistance grade according to EN 1143-1. How many weapons you are allowed to store in them and what is important regarding ammunition depends on the regulations in your place of residence:
| Kriterium | Regelung in Österreich |
|---|---|
Modern gun safes from Bremer Tresor feature dedicated compartments for ammunition as well as sufficient storage space for handguns, long guns, and ammunition.
The experienced team at Bremer Tresor will be happy to advise you on the applicable regulations and the rules to be followed. Please contact our friendly customer service by e-mail or telephone.
Gun safe for handguns and long guns
Storage of handguns
A handgun safe is designed for the storage of pistols and revolvers. At Bremer Tresor, you will find these in various designs and sizes. How many handguns are permitted depends on the class and weight of the safe; the overview above shows it for your specific case.
Storage of long guns
A long gun safe from Bremer Tresor differs mainly in its security levels and space availability.
The classes do not differ in terms of space for long guns; the size of the safe is the deciding factor there. Any restriction, if applicable, concerns the number of handguns.
Installation and access rules for your gun safe
The correct location for your gun safe is crucial for security. The room in which you intend to place your gun safe should meet the following criteria:
- Private
- Dry
- Securely anchorable
- Access only possible for authorized persons
Modern gun safes can additionally be protected by biometric security systems such as fingerprint sensors, which ensure fast and at the same time encrypted access. This prevents unauthorized access.
Your standardized gun safe: define your requirements
If you want to buy a gun safe, you should definitely define your own requirements and wishes in addition to the legal specifications. To find the right gun safe for you, you should ask yourself the following questions in advance:
- Number of weapons: How many weapons are to be stored?
- Weapon types: Which types of weapons are involved?
- Weight of the safe: How heavy should or must the gun safe be (in kg)?
- Type of safe: Should it be a free-standing or a permanently anchored safe?
- Ammunition storage: Should the safe also offer space for ammunition?
- Lock type: Which type of lock do you prefer (key, combination lock, biometric sensor, etc.)?
Once you have answered these questions, nothing stands in the way of purchasing your ideal gun safe in our online shop. You choose the type of lock yourself and determine whether we deliver to the curb or to your desired location, including anchoring.
Which lock is ideal?
The lock is the central component of a safe. Various locks offer different advantages:
| Lock type | Advantages |
|---|---|
| Double-bit lock | Particularly robust, easy to operate |
| Combination locks | Convenient access via code, no key required |
| Kaba Mauer lock | High security, difficult to manipulate |
| RFID lock | Fast operation, very user-friendly |
Which safe lock is the right one for you depends entirely on your needs. We are happy to help you select the right locking mechanism for your individual gun safe.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
By law, a gun safe does not have to be anchored, although it is recommended. It is up to the local firearms authority to interpret the legal text as part of their duty of care and to formulate clear provisions. Many firearms authorities require anchoring for gun safes weighing less than 200 kg. Anchoring can be carried out in the floor or on the wall. Some firearms authorities require the anchoring to be performed by a specialist. Be sure to consult with your local firearms authority.
A grade N/0 gun safe differs from a grade 1 gun safe in that only five handguns may be stored in grade 0 safes weighing up to 200 kg. However, if the N/0 safe weighs more than 200 kg, you may store up to ten handguns in it. In a grade 1 gun safe, you may store an unlimited number of long guns, handguns, and ammunition.
That depends on your requirements for space and security against break-in. There are gun safes, long gun safes, and handgun safes. A grade 0 gun safe offers space for up to five handguns and an unlimited number of long guns as well as ammunition (provided it is a long gun safe). If you want to store more than 5 weapons in a handgun safe, you need a grade N/0 gun safe (EN 1143-1) weighing over 200 kg or a grade 1 gun safe (EN 1143-1).
To decide where you can place your gun safe, you should measure the installation site. The dimensions of most gun safes, small and large, are indicated in centimeters or millimeters. Compare the interior and exterior dimensions of the safes with the space you have available. In addition to length, height, and width, you should also check whether the selected location can support the weight of the safe.
