A fireproof safe against flames and break-ins
A fireproof safe offers protection against both fires and burglaries. Fireproof safes are available in various designs, differing in size, resistance grade, and fire resistance.
A safe generally has fire-retardant properties. However, during a fire, extreme heat develops, which the steel conducts into the interior of the safe – temperatures quickly exceed 700 degrees, destroying valuables, cash, documents, and any hard drive.
A fireproof safe, on the other hand, features a high-quality casing that ensures no excessive heat can build up inside the safe. Fire resistance for paper and data media must ensure that documents, cash, and USB sticks remain intact.
This fire resistance is tested according to EN 1047-1 and EN 15659 and confirmed with a certificate. During testing, the temperature inside the safe must not increase by more than 150°C, which is sufficient for paper. This results in three classes regarding fire resistance:
- Fireproof safe 30 minutes
- Fireproof safe 60 minutes
- Fireproof safe 120 minutes
Furthermore, fireproof safes, more precisely data safes, are also certified according to S60DIS and S120DIS. With this certification, the temperature inside the safe must not increase by more than 30 °C for 30 or 60 minutes, respectively.
EN 1047-1 (S60P, S120P, S60DIS, S120DIS) or EN 15659 (LFS30P, LFS60P) and certified accordingly by official testing bodies.Fireproof safes for 30, 60, and 120 minutes
The most popular series among safes fireproof for 30 minutes are Fortuna and Kronos. These are safes that you can configure upon request to be fireproof for 30 minutes instead of just fire-retardant.
If you are looking for a 60-minute fireproof safe, the Pallas and Jata series are ideal. Here, fire resistance is integrated as standard and does not need to be selected additionally. Both Pallas and Jata offer solid burglary protection paired with good fire resistance.
You can also get a fireproof safe with 120 minutes of fire protection at Bremer Tresor. This is the strongest fire protection possible. The Talos and Vulcanus series are particularly popular.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Colloquially, yes. Technically, only the tested fire protection class with its specified time duration counts. A cabinet without a test mark has no proven duration of protection.
That depends on how long it takes for the fire department to reach the object and what is in the safe. 30 minutes covers the standard case, 60 or 120 minutes provide more of a buffer.
Documents, contracts, policies, photos, and data media. A separate class is necessary for data media because they sustain damage at much lower temperatures than paper.
