Long Gun Safe: Resistance Class & Security Level

Since July 7, 2017, a gun safe must comply with a standardized security level according to EN-1143 in order to be approved. The break-in protection of long gun safes is tested and classified by leading testing institutes such as ECB-S and VdS in elaborate testing procedures. Based on a specific resistance value, the safe is assigned a resistance grade according to EN-1143.

In a long gun safe with security level 0 or resistance class N/0 and resistance class 1, an unlimited number of long guns can be stored. Joint storage with ammunition is also permitted.

Different rules apply to joint storage with handguns. In safes of resistance class 0 or security level N/0, only 5 handguns may be kept. However, if the N/0 safe weighs more than 200 kg, you may store up to 10 handguns in it.

In resistance class 1, this limitation is removed. In a class 1 long gun safe, you can store an unlimited number of long guns, handguns, as well as ammunition.

Long Gun Safe Class 0

The Zeus series includes several popular long gun safes of security level N/0. Between 16 and 26 long guns can be accommodated in the respective safe. Adjustable shelves and internal storage compartments ensure flexibility and adaptation to your own space requirements.

• Zeus 16-2: 175 kg, 16 long guns + 5 handguns
• Zeus 20-2: 232 kg, 20 long guns + 10 handguns
• Zeus 26-2: 280 kg, 26 long guns (14 at the back, 12 at the front), unlimited ammunition + 10 handguns

Long Gun Safe Class 1

The Hades series represents long gun safes with the highest safety standards of security level 1. This means that an unlimited number of long guns, handguns, and ammunition may be stored in them. Models such as Hades 16-2, 18-2, or 26-2 offer individual capacities.

In addition, the models impress with fire-retardant properties, adjustable shelves, internal and door storage compartments, a cleaning rod holder, and a hook rail.

Other Class 1 models:

• Baldur 3: 89 kg, 3 gun holders, 3 key hooks, 3 compartments, storage compartment, cleaning rod holder
• Hathor 7: 199 kg, 7 gun holders, storage compartments in the door, partition, internal storage compartment, hook rail, cleaning rod holder

Regarding the security level or resistance class, there is also a difference in terms of the insurance coverage.

The Right Lock for the Long Gun Safe

For gun safes, however, it makes sense to consider a keyless locking system, as access by a second person is already considered a punishable offense. By upgrading to a keyless locking system, unauthorized access can be prevented more easily.

You have the choice between the following locks:

• Electronic combination lock
• Fingerprint lock

Especially for shared use or if there are children in the household, a biometric or electronic lock is recommended.
