What does a fireproof safe protect?
A fireproof safe protects your important documents, papers, and data media from loss in the event of a fire. When protecting paper and data media, a distinction must be made between different degrees of heat. For example, when storing paper and banknotes, care is taken to ensure that the interior of your safe with 60 minutes of fire protection does not heat up by more than 150°C. This ensures that paper is not damaged. For media such as data carriers and electronics, this temperature increase must not exceed 30°C to ensure that the media are not damaged. When storing valuables, you should assess the heat resistance. If there are no electronics present, the heat resistance of a fireproof safe that is fire-resistant for 60 minutes is sufficient for paper.
| Medium | Max. internal temperature increase |
|---|---|
| Paper | 150°C |
| Data media | 30°C |
How does a safe become fireproof?
During the manufacturing of a safe intended to be fireproof for 60 minutes, care is taken to ensure that only non-flammable materials are used. This applies to the metal shells, but also to the filling material and the hinges. In addition, an insulating filling material is processed between the multiple metal walls so that heating of the interior is avoided. To also prevent the penetration of extinguishing water and fire gases, the safes that are fire-resistant for 60 minutes are equipped with a fire rebate on the door. This acts as a seal. Above a certain temperature, it begins to expand, up to 10 times the size of the original seal. After expansion, fire, water, and air no longer have a chance to penetrate the interior, ensuring the fire protection of your documents and valuables. Through testing by the independent testing institute VdS, fire protection safes are tested by being heated in a fire chamber at temperatures over 1000°C for 60 minutes. Additionally, a floor fire is simulated by a drop test from over 9 meters. All our safe models remained fireproof and functional after this test, which is why they have a corresponding certificate according to EN 1047-1 that confirms this fire protection.
Fireproof safes configurable for over 60 minutes
Once you have decided on a safe that is fireproof for 60 minutes, you must decide on certification according to S60P or S60DIS. Certifications ending in "P" are tested for the medium paper, and those ending in "DIS" for data media.
| Certification | Medium |
|---|---|
| S60P | Paper |
| S60DIS | Data media |
You can combine your safe with the chosen 60 minutes of fire protection with various burglary protection levels. At Bremer Tresor, we place great value on customizability, so you can obtain safes with different security levels and sizes. You can choose the appropriate safe based on the desired number of folders. If you are not storing DIN A4 documents in document cabinets, this format still allows you to best estimate the size. In addition, the internal dimensions are provided for each model, and the interior can be individually arranged using adjustable shelves. The locking mechanism can be selected regardless of the model. Thus, for every safe, you can decide whether you want to open it with a key or an electronic lock. Keep in mind when making your decision that either a key must be kept safe or a numeric code must be memorized.
