Step 1

Consider the contents

To choose the perfect safe for your needs, we recommend first defining the items you wish to protect. The required properties and size of the safe depend on this. The contents of a safe are divided into three categories:

Valuables, burglary protection
This category describes all items with a monetary value that can be easily replaced by insurance in the event of loss. If your sole concern is safeguarding valuables, we recommend a safe from our security safe category with the appropriate security level.
Documents and keepsakes, fire protection
If your goal is to secure and preserve documents and keepsakes, the fire protection of your safe is the primary focus. Documents and keepsakes (you can find a more detailed list in the Items Worth Protecting section) generally cannot be insured. Therefore, the security level and the associated insurance cover are of secondary importance for these safes. For reliable protection, our safe consultants recommend a safe from the fireproof safe or fire-resistant safe category.
Valuables, documents and keepsakes, burglary and fire protection
Based on our many years of experience in safe consultation, it has become clear that a combination model is often desired, which both insures valuables against theft and reliably protects documents and keepsakes from fire. Opt for a combined application from our burglary and fireproof safe and security safe category with an appropriate fire protection rating.

Step 2

Choose security level

The next step in our safe-buying guide is to choose the right security level or the required resistance grade of the safe. This step is important if you intend to store valuables in your safe. One of the most important features of a safe is reliable theft protection. To ensure insurance coverage, the choice of security level is crucial. First, estimate the value of the contents: the security level of your safe is determined by this. The higher the security level, the higher the insurance cover in the event of a claim.

i
TipPlan for a 25 percent buffer so that you can continue to store and insure your valuables safely in the future.

You can easily select the right security level with us based on the insurance sum. The area of application (private or commercial) plays a decisive role here and is reflected in the different insurance sums. For private use, the stated insurance sums are significantly higher compared to commercial use. You can find a detailed overview under Security Levels.

Step 3

Choose fire protection level

Our fireproof safes in the 60-minute fireproof safe or 120-minute fireproof safe categories offer tested fire and heat protection for 60 and 120 minutes, respectively. For more information on testing procedures and classifications, please see our fire protection classes section.

i
TipAlways choose a safe with a certified security level. Even if non-certified safes promise a certain level of fire resistance, temperatures of 700 °C can occur inside the safe in the event of a fire. Certified safes undergo an intensive testing process. During testing at a temperature of 1090 °C, the interior of the safe must not exceed a temperature increase of 150 °C; only in this way can it be guaranteed that papers and documents remain undamaged.
Step 4

Choose size

Once you have decided on a specific combination of security level and fire protection, you can now select your safe model. To determine the correct size, two factors must be considered:

Interior size
Now that you have thought about the contents of your safe in the first step, you can select the size based on your estimated space requirements. To help you better assess the dimensions of our safes, our safe consultants have equipped all safes with folders. Plan for a 25 percent buffer to avoid having to buy a new one in the future.
Space at the installation site
If you have already designated a specific spot for your safe, pay attention to the exterior dimensions of your safe; this applies especially to wall safes and furniture safes. To ensure that your safe has enough room at its intended location, you can use our comprehensive filter to find a safe with the perfect exterior dimensions.

Step 5

Choose the right lock

When selecting the locking system for your safe, there are various equipment options that should be adapted to your needs and the use of the security cabinet. Bremer Tresor offers you four different locking options:

Key lock
Double-bit high-security lock with two keys.
Combination lock
Electronic combination lock with a 6- to 8-digit numeric code.
Key and combination lock
Electronic opening with a 6- to 8-digit numeric code plus a double-bit lock. The double-bit lock is generally used for emergency opening, for example, if the code is lost.
Key and combination lock with special functions
Electronic opening with a 6- to 8-digit numeric code plus a concealed double-bit lock. 30 different user codes, opening logs, computer interface, alarm code, and much more.

The choice depends on two factors:

Handling your lock
Which opening method do you prefer? The following questions are decisive for the selection: How often do you open the safe during the day or week? Where can you safely store a potential key?
Number of people who have access to the safe
If several people are to have access to the safe, opening via a numeric code is recommended, as several codes can be stored here. The more keys that are made and shared, the higher the risk of loss or theft.
!
The police reportWith safes that have a double-bit high-security lock, vandalism frequently occurs during burglaries, as burglars ransack the apartment or house while searching for the key.

A detailed description, including the advantages and disadvantages, can be found under Safe Locks.

Step 6
