Security levels and resistance grades of wall safes

For the secure storage of various valuables such as documents, jewelry, cash, and data carriers, there are a wide variety of safes that are particularly well-suited for certain circumstances and requirements. Built-in safes for walls and floors are particularly compact and discreet.

With wall safes, a profile is integrated into the masonry, which ensures a firm connection. The rear wall and side walls are therefore inaccessible with a wall safe. Furthermore, flat handles on the front make it possible for wall safes hidden behind paintings to go completely unnoticed.

Attempted break-ins: Testing and certification according to standards

The respective safe security levels attest to the burglary protection of safes. Wall safes receive security levels or resistance grades following a uniformly regulated test by approved certification bodies. These institutes test the safes based on break-in simulations according to the applicable standards:

Fireproof built-in wall safes upon request

Security levels according to EN 14450 guarantee basic protection against break-ins. The more comprehensive tests according to EN 1143-1 or EN 1143-2 also refer purely to the break-in resistance of safes. However, in order to keep documents safe and protect cash from decaying into ash, solid fire protection is also required.

EN 15659 and EN 1047-1 regulate the requirements for the fire resistance of safes:

• EN 15659: lightweight cabinets that offer basic fire and heat protection.
• EN 1047-1: reliable protection against fire, extinguishing water, and fire gases.

Hidden wall safes built into the masonry cannot be manufactured as fireproof. This is because the internal hinges, which prevent the fittings from protruding, cannot be combined with a fire seal as standard. Moreover, due to their construction, wall safes cannot be classified higher than security levels S1 & S2 and resistance grades N/0 & 1. This means that wall safes are insured for lower amounts.

Which types of locks are available?

Choosing the right lock for your wall safe is crucial to maximize both security and convenience. Depending on your needs, you can choose between different types of locks that meet different requirements for ease of use and security. Small and large wall safes: Security level S2 and resistance grade 1

The wall safes from Bremer Tresor belong to security level S2 according to EN 14450 or resistance grade 1 according to EN 1143-1. This means that they are excellently suited for small and medium-priced valuables. This provides you with a compact wall safe that reliably protects against theft.

Wall safe: small, discreet, and flexible

If you are looking for a small wall safe that offers space for jewelry and other small valuables, you will find the Indra and Thisa series at Bremer Tresor.

For example, the Indra 20 offers a volume of 3 liters and weighs only 6 kilograms. With dimensions of 16.6 x 30 x 20 cm (HxWxD), the wall safe does not require much space and can generally be perfectly integrated into the building structure. Equipped with a double-bit key lock or combination lock, it is perfect for the home.

An alternative is the Thisa 30S, a model that complies with resistance grade 1 according to EN 1143-1 and can therefore be insured privately up to €65,000 and commercially up to €20,000. Weighing 36 kilos with dimensions of 33 x 39 x 26.7 cm (HxWxD), it has a volume of 13 liters. A combination lock or double-bit key lock can be selected as the lock type.

Large wall safes for walling in or bolting on

The Indra and Thisa series also include large wall safes that are suitable for things worth protecting of various kinds, including document folders and books.

The Indra 60XL is a wall safe of security level S2 according to EN 14450 and also complies with construction type B according to VDMA 24992. Insurance institutes insure the safe privately up to €20,000; a commercial classification is not provided for security level S2. With dimensions of 60 x 60 x 36 cm, a weight of 48 kg, and a volume of 82 liters, documents, jewelry, and cash can be safely stored in the Indra 60XL.

Even more spacious is the Indra 80 with its 156 liters of volume.

The Thisa series offers the Thisa 80, a wall safe of resistance grade 1 according to EN 1143-1, which means it can be insured up to €65,000 (privately) or up to €20,000 (commercially). It weighs 100 kilos and offers 89 liters of storage space with dimensions of 83 x 49 x 38.7 cm.

Those requiring even more space will find the Thisa 120, a wall safe of resistance grade 1 with 194 liters of volume.

Installing a wall safe correctly

For a wall safe, it is worth leaving the assembly and installation to professional personnel. Wall safes only provide their full protection when they are professionally and permanently anchored in the masonry. Here you will find our tips for a successful installation:

• Choosing the right wall: Solid walls made of concrete or solid brick offer the best stability. Lightweight or plasterboard walls are unsuitable.
• Installation during the construction or renovation phase: The safe should ideally be installed during a construction or renovation phase to ensure optimal security.
• Complete encasement with concrete: The safe must be completely enclosed by concrete, i.e., not only on the sides but also on the rear wall.
• Concrete reinforcement: There should be at least 100 mm of concrete reinforcement around the safe body to ensure a firm connection to the wall.
• Professional installation: It is recommended to have the installation carried out by experienced professional personnel to ensure the maximum security of the safe.
