Basics

What defines a key safe of construction type B or class S2?

A key safe according to construction type B, now known as security level S2 according to EN 14450, is designed to simplify secure key management for you. Keys that are not used daily, in particular, are safely stored here and optimally protected against theft.

However, who exactly benefits from buying a key safe according to construction type B? In private settings, keys that grant access to rooms in apartment buildings, vehicles, or neighbors' front doors can be stolen. If such a key is stolen, high costs can quickly arise. Sometimes even the entire locking system must be replaced. A key safe ensures optimal protection here.

In commercial settings, a stolen key also has unpleasant consequences. The person who stole the key has access to protected areas in the company. This makes it easy for them to steal valuable objects, such as work materials or important company documents.

To minimize exactly these risks, our key safes according to construction type B impress with:

  • Burglary protection
  • Modern locking technologies that simplify locking and opening the safe
  • An organizational system with key hooks, key panels, and color-coded subdivision
History

Burglary protection and security – what is VDMA 24992?

VDMA is the abbreviation for the German Engineering Federation (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbauer). However, the key safe VDMA 24992, for example, was not a security standard as often assumed, but a construction specification.

Steel cabinets with the designation "Security Level B" are indeed manufactured according to this construction standard, but they were not tested or subjected to a break-in test. Since January 2004, the construction standard VDMA 24992 is no longer current. It has been replaced by the security levels S1 and S2 according to the European standard EN 14450 and resistance grade 0–5 according to EN 1143-1. These standards describe standardized test procedures in which the safe is subjected to a real break-in test. Depending on the resistance level, a security level or resistance grade is assigned.

Lock Selection

Which lock is the right one for your key safe of construction type B?

All our key safes of construction type B can be configured with different locking systems. This applies both to key safes on the outside of buildings and to models installed indoors. These are your options:

  • Key safe with double-bit lock: A so-called double-bit lock is a high-security lock that makes breaking in with a lock pick impossible. This is a lock where a key with two "bits" (i.e., side incisions/profiles) moves a bolt. The two bits engage in the lock and ensure that the bolt can only be opened or closed with the correct key.
  • Key safe with combination lock: A key safe with a combination lock is also a secure way to protect the contents. Here, the key safe of construction type B is simply opened with a numerical code that is known only to selected persons.
  • Key safe with combination lock and emergency key: Technology is also not always infallible. For even more security, we therefore also offer you a key safe according to construction type B with a combination lock and emergency key in combination. The Kaba Mauer lock B90 is a particularly reliable option here, as it features a hidden double-bit lock.
Organization

Organization made easy

When it comes to choosing the right key safe according to construction type B, the organization of the safe's interior also plays a significant role. Our key safes impress with:

  • Robust key hooks
  • Key panels
  • Color-coded divisions

In addition, we offer our customers different models. You can store over 500 keys in our models, which is particularly worthwhile for customers in the commercial sector. Naturally, we are also happy to advise you on the different locks and provide you with all the important information you need to keep your keys safe.

Certification

Why should you also opt for a key safe according to construction type B?

Even though construction type B is no longer current for key safes, this certification remains common. We ensure that our construction type B models meet the construction specifications of VDMA 24992. Our key safes of security class S2 are also subjected to the EN 14450 test procedure to meet modern certifications as well.

Your advantage here – the current security levels S1 and S2 are a currently valid testing standard with certification. Furthermore, the safes are tested for burglary protection and therefore offer a certain degree of protection against unwanted unauthorized access. This way, you are on the safe side when choosing a safe. And should you need other safes such as data safes or cash safes in addition to a key safe of construction type B, you will find what you are looking for with us as well! FAQ

Frequently asked questions

B comes from the older VDMA 24992 classification. It describes a simple security cabinet and is not tested according to EN 1143-1.

For internal organization, yes. As soon as keys to third-party properties are stored and you are liable for them, a tested key safe with resistance grade is the appropriate level.
