RFID lock for safes - contactless security

Last reviewed on 10. August 2026 2 min read by Tim Herberger, Fachredaktion bei Bremer Tresor

RFID locks are specialized locks that are opened contactlessly using a specific RFID card. RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. It is a modern technology that enables contactless data exchange between a transponder and a reader/writer device.

The elegant design of the Elostar® flexID multi lock ensures a timeless look. The technology is powered by a battery compartment located inside the safe door, which holds a 9V block battery. Functions of the RFID lock, opening without a PIN

The RFID lock for safes is opened using a corresponding card. The card is equipped with the special MIFARE® DESfire® encryption technology, which increases the security of your data. After registering the included RFID card once, the lock can be easily opened by placing the card on it. With the “INSYS lockID” mobile app, you can also increase the security level of your lock by using your personal biometric data (fingerprint or facial recognition).

Technology

Technology and how it works

The RFID lock Elostar® flexID multi features a motorized lock that opens when the data on the card matches the data stored in the lock. Particularly practical: All access attempts to the lock can be easily read out via an access log in the app.

Certification

Security without a PIN, contactless with RFID technology

The lock is officially certified by the German testing institute VdS and the European standard ECB-S. To obtain this certification, the lock undergoes a demanding testing and manipulation process. The lock only receives its respective certification after passing these strict test criteria.

Frequently asked questions

What is an RFID lock?
An RFID lock uses radio frequency identification technology to control access to safes. Unlocking is achieved through wireless communication between an RFID chip (also known as a transponder) and the lock.
How do chip locks work?
Locks with chips, especially RFID locks, use an electronic interface to grant access to authorized persons. The chip sends a signal to the lock, which then unlocks. This creates an efficient and user-friendly system.
How secure are RFID locks?
The security of RFID locks depends on the implementation. However, RFID locks are considered reliable because they are difficult to manipulate and do not require physical contact. The use of encryption technology further contributes to security. Furthermore, the Elostar flexID is VdS and ECB-S certified.
What is a transponder lock?
With a transponder lock, the RFID chip acts as a key. The transponder sends a signal to the lock to open it. The advantage here lies in the convenience. This makes a transponder lock a secure alternative to conventional keys.
