Which deadlines apply to which documents is explained in detail under Safely storing documents.
Securing and insuring valuables
For various items, household contents insurance does not dictate specific locking requirements. Objects above a certain value, however, are exclusively insured if kept in a security safe. How to insure the sum in detail is explained under Insuring a safe.
Read your insurance documents to see which items are covered and which require an additional security container. For example, it might state: Compensation limit for cash 1,500 euros. This means that if you keep more than 1,500 euros in cash, a security safe is a prerequisite for insurance coverage. These regulations differ for different items and also for different customers.
Protecting personal data and memories
Often, it is personal data that should not be lying around accessible to everyone. This includes bank statements, medical records, letters, and documents. Instead of trying to hide them, it is advisable to set up a depot in a safe. This way, you always know where your documents are and that no one will stumble upon them. Furthermore, you protect them from fire. A furniture safe is usually sufficient for this at home.
Besides theft, another intruder is often forgotten: fire. When a fire breaks out, everything is usually destroyed. Fireproof safes are tested with seals and insulation layers against fire, water, and toxic gases. You can store existentially important and personally significant items as well as documents securely, which will then remain available even after a fire. In the private sector, these are personal documents, insurance policies, photo albums, and keepsakes. In the business sector, it is everything fundamental to the operation of the business: order books, dunning systems, insurance papers, and inventory that serve as a basis for insurance reimbursement.
