Grade 0 hand gun safe according to EN 1143-1
The hand gun safe is available in two different resistance grades or security levels: security level 0 and security level 1. You can store handguns and ammunition in the Grade 0 hand gun safe; how many are permitted depends on the regulations in your place of residence and the weight of the safe.
The hand gun safe is a gun safe for Grade 0 handguns, designed in its dimensions for the storage of handguns or pistols and resistant to attempted break-ins. The weight of the safes or the weight limit of 200 kg is also relevant.
Based on these two factors, the safes are tested and certified according to EN 1143-1. They are then assigned a resistance grade or security level.
How many weapons are allowed inside?
| Kriterium | Regelung in Österreich |
|---|---|
There are also requirements for ammunition and anchoring. The most important points in brief:
You can find suitable models under hand gun safe and long gun safe. You can also get a separate ammunition safe from Bremer Tresor.
It is usually the case that a hand gun safe is rather small and does not weigh 200 kg. If you would like to store more handguns securely or be on the safe side from the start, a Grade 1 hand gun safe is suitable, for example the Argos 8 with space for 8 handguns.
The classification into certain security levels is also important for insurance companies, as the contents can be insured accordingly. A Grade 0 hand gun safe offers burglary protection in accordance with its resistance grade.
This means that you can insure the contents of the safe (weapons, valuables, cash) against theft for up to €40,000 (private use) or up to €10,000 (commercial use).
| Resistance grade | private use | commercial use |
|---|---|---|
Security level/resistance grade N/0 according to EN 1143-1
|
€40,000 | €10,000 |
Security level/resistance grade 1 according to EN 1143-1
|
€65,000 | €20,000 |
Grade 0 hand gun safe in various sizes
A very popular Grade 0 hand gun safe model in the Bremer Tresor range is the Nestor.
- The Nestor 5 weighs 57 kg, has five gun holders and one shelf. You get it with a standard double-bit lock or an optional combination lock.
- The Nestor 5-1 weighs 60 kg, is slightly more spacious and has space for five handguns. It has a separate storage compartment for ammunition etc. and can also be opened via a double-bit or combination lock.
Lock variants and selection guide
A Grade 0 hand gun safe can be equipped with various safe locks. A double-bit high-security lock is installed as standard, which is robust, fire-resistant and completely independent of electricity. Alternatively, modern electronic locks or the Kaba Mauer lock (possible with larger models) are available.
Electronic locks allow convenient operation via numerical code and offer additional functions such as super code, opening delay or audit trail. A high-quality Kaba Mauer lock ensures reliable, resistant and certified security, as it is specially developed for use in security and gun safes and combines maximum mechanical stability with modern lock mechanics.
Which type of lock is suitable depends on your individual needs. For single users and multiple authorized persons, an electronic lock with user management makes sense. Authorities and insurers are increasingly recommending electronic combination locks, as it is impossible to lose a key.
Regarding maintenance: The battery for electronic locks is located inside the safe. An acoustic warning sounds when the voltage drops; several openings are still possible after this. Emergency power supply from the outside is also possible, so that you maintain access at all times.
Grade 0 hand gun safe: fire-retardant & fireproof
In principle, Grade 0 hand gun safes according to EN 1143-1 are made of fire-retardant materials. The steel from which they are made prevents flames from spreading to the inside of the safe. However, steel heats up extremely (over 700 °C).
If there is ammunition inside, it will ignite or explode due to the heat. Documents and data media are also destroyed. Therefore, if you want to store ammunition or documents in your hand gun safe, it should offer fire protection.
A fireproof gun safe for Grade 0 handguns according to EN 1143-1 in the Bremer Tresor range ensures that the temperature does not reach extreme levels so quickly. The hand gun safes withstand the heat for about 30 minutes.
Installation and access rules
The installation location of a Grade 0 hand gun safe is crucial for security. The safe should be in a regularly used building, on a solid surface, dry and not publicly visible. Anchoring in the wall or floor is ideal. Children and unauthorized persons must not have access, and the key or numerical code must always be kept securely.
In households with children, installation in a lockable room is recommended. Rooms with moisture or direct sunlight are unsuitable. Upon request, we will deliver your hand gun safe to the point of use, including transport up/down stairs and professional installation.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
You can store handguns safely in a handgun safe. Up to five handguns may be stored in a class 0 handgun safe. If it weighs over 200 kg, this limit increases to ten handguns. A long gun safe can also offer enough space for the storage of handguns, long guns, and ammunition.
It depends on whether it is a class 0 or class 1 handgun safe. A class 0 safe can hold five handguns
The difference lies in the number and type of weapons that may be stored. Class 0 allows for the storage of up to five handguns (or ten if it weighs over 200 kg). A class 1 gun safe, on the other hand, allows for the storage of any number of long guns, handguns, and ammunition.
There is a choice of double-bit key lock, electronic lock, and Kaba Mauer. Electronic models and Kaba Mauer offer the greatest convenience and a high level of security.
A class 0 handgun safe should be placed in an inhabited, dry room on a solid surface. Wall or floor anchoring is recommended to ensure maximum stability and protection.
In Germany, a class 0 gun safe is legally required for handguns (note existing protections), while in Austria, personal responsibility applies. In both countries, the following rule applies: weapons must be protected securely against unauthorized access.
