Safe VdS Class 1: tested by VdS according to EN 1143-1

A VdS class 1 safe is tested according to EN 1143-1 by VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH. You will find only models with this certificate here. As a guideline, these can be insured for up to 65,000 euros privately and 20,000 euros commercially.

Distinction

How this selection differs from Resistance Grade 1

Both terms refer to the same testing standard according to EN 1143-1. The difference lies not in the standard, but in the testing body. Under EN 1143-1, several independent institutes are authorized to certify, primarily VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH, ECB-S, and IMP in Europe.

When the testing body mattersIt makes no difference for security; the standard is the same. It becomes relevant if your insurer explicitly requires a VdS certificate. When in doubt, check with them before ordering.
Level of protection

What Resistance Grade 1 is designed for

A safe with this classification features tested burglary protection and is suitable for most valuables in private households and small businesses. There are no rules on what should be stored inside, but common items include:

These are reference values from the insurance industry, not a guarantee. What matters is always what is written in your contract. Discuss the sum with your insurer before purchasing to ensure the classification matches your actual needs.

Selection

What you should look out for before buying

First, determine what you want to store inside. This will determine the interior dimensions and capacity required, and only then is it worth looking at specific models. Also, check if additional fire protection is needed, as burglary protection and fire protection are two separate tests.

You have a choice regarding the design. A freestanding safe can be moved later. A built-in safe or wall safe disappears into the wall and is thus the most discreet solution.

Don't forget anchoringSafes weighing under 1,000 kilograms must be anchored; most insurers make this a requirement. We provide the appropriate anchoring material, and we can handle the installation upon request.

Regarding the location: The fewer people who know where the safe is, the better. Office, bedroom, or basement are common locations. Check whether the floor or wall can support the weight, as models in this class can quickly weigh several hundred kilograms depending on their size.

Frequently asked questions

The standard is the same, namely EN 1143-1. The difference lies in the testing body. This category only shows safes that have been tested by the VdS, whereas the Resistance Grade 1 category shows all of them, regardless of the institute, i.e. including those from ECB-S and IMP.

Only if your insurer expressly requires it. In terms of the protection itself, the testing body makes no difference, because they all test according to the same standard. When in doubt, check with your insurer.

As a rule, yes. Safes weighing less than 1,000 kilograms should be anchored

Free-standing safes that can be moved later, as well as built-in and wall safes that disappear into the wall and are therefore less conspicuous. Both are available in Resistance Grade 1.

There are no regulations regarding the contents. Common items include cash, jewelry, watches, precious metals, data carriers, as well as documents and folders. The decisive factor is that the value matches the insurance sum.
