Safe VdS Class 2: tested by VdS according to EN 1143-1

A VdS Class 2 safe complies with resistance grade 2 according to EN 1143-1 and bears the certificate of VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH. This level is worthwhile if medium-duty tools are nearby or if an intruder could be specifically targeting the location. As a guideline, it is insurable up to 100,000 euros for private use and 50,000 euros for commercial use.

Distinction

What distinguishes this selection from Resistance Grade 2

Both terms refer to the same test according to EN 1143-1. The difference lies in the testing body. Certification may be issued by several independent institutes, primarily VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH, ECB-S, and IMP in Europe.

Protection level

When Grade 2 is the right level

Resistance Grade 2 is the level above Grade 1 and is worthwhile primarily in two situations. First, when medium-heavy tools are accessible in the vicinity of the safe, such as a hammer drill or angle grinder in a workshop, garage, or on a construction site. Second, when it is expected that a perpetrator will come prepared and bring their own tools.

The difference compared to Grade 1 lies in the construction. The door and body are built more robustly, which measurably increases the time required for an attack. It is precisely this time expenditure that the test according to EN 1143-1 measures.

Classification

EN 1143-1 vs. EN 14450

Both standards are frequently confused, even though they describe different tests:

Selection

What to clarify before buying

Start with the contents. Cash, jewelry, documents, and folders are the standard. If weapons and ammunition are added, the requirements of weapons law also apply; we carry separate gun safes for this.

Next are the equipment questions: lock type, number of shelves, and whether additional fire protection is needed. Finally, the dimensions, both exterior and interior, and the weight. The installation site must support both.

Frequently asked questions

The standard is the same, EN 1143-1. The difference lies in the testing body. This category only shows safes tested by VdS, while the Resistance Grade 2 category shows all of them, including those by ECB-S and IMP.
