Provinzial Holding AG is the second-largest public insurance company in Germany. Anyone insured there who wishes to cover valuables beyond standard limits requires a certified container. This page outlines the requirements set by Provinzial for this purpose.

For customers in the north, there are separate pages for Provinzial Nord in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and for the Hamburger Feuerkasse.

i
Important for contextThe figures on this page represent Provinzial's conditions, not general industry standards. Other insurers set different, sometimes significantly varying, limits. Your own policy is always the governing document.

Private

Home Contents Insurance according to VHB 2017

Home contents insurance protects movable household items. Without a safe, strict limits apply to valuables: a total of up to 30 percent of the sum insured, jewelry up to 25,000 euros, and cash up to 1,500 euros.

These limits can be increased if the valuables are kept in a locked and certified security safe:

Safe requirement Minimum weight Coverage up to
Resistance Grade 1 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 200 kg 65,000 euros
Resistance Grade 2 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 200 kg 100,000 euros
Resistance Grade 3 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 200 kg 200,000 euros

Please note the minimum weight of 200 kilograms. A lighter safe with the same rating does not meet the requirement, even if it is professionally anchored. Suitable models can be found under Resistance Grade 1, Resistance Grade 2, and Resistance Grade 3.

Commercial

Inventory Insurance FirmenPlus 6.2020

Commercial inventory insurance covers over 2,500 types of businesses and protects not only cash but also jewelry, precious metals, and goods such as mobile phones and cigarettes:

Safe requirement Minimum weight Coverage up to
Resistance Grade 1 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 300 kg 24,000 euros
Resistance Grade 2 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 300 kg 60,000 euros
Resistance Grade 3 according to VdS 2450 and EN 1143-1 300 kg 120,000 euros

Two differences compared to private coverage stand out. The minimum weight increases to 300 kilograms, and the compensation limits are lower, despite the higher requirement. This is not a contradiction, but the standard system: in commercial sectors, the risk of a targeted attack is greater.

Special cases

Mobile phones and cigarettes

Separate rules apply to these two groups of goods because they are particularly frequent targets for break-ins. In these cases, Provinzial does not require a high-security safe but allows a security cabinet of level S1 according to EN 14450, provided it is properly anchored.

This is the lower of the two standards and therefore significantly more affordable. Entry-level models start in the three-digit price range.

Procedure

How to find the right model

First, clarify with your insurer the exact sum you wish to cover. This will determine the necessary resistance grade, and only then should you look at individual safes. Pay attention to both conditions simultaneously: the classification and the minimum weight.

If you are unsure which model meets both requirements, please contact us. We will verify the classification, weight, and dimensions against your specifications before you place an order.
